2. getting started
lOAD AND RUN THE FILE CALLED "BOOT 9.3" TO START THE PROGRAM. oNCE
THE MAIN PROGRAM IS LOADED, A TITLE SCREEN WITH A SHAREWARE NOTICE IS
DISPLAYED WHILE VARIOUS SUBPROGRAMS ARE LOADED. wHEN THE TITLE SCREEN
DISAPPEARS AND A MENU OF OPTIONS IS DISPLAYED ON THE SCREEN, YOU ARE
READY TO BEGIN. tHIS INITIAL LIST OF OPTIONS IS CALLED THE "MAIN
MENU", AND IT IS REFERRED TO AS SUCH THROUGHOUT THIS DOCUMENTATION.
2.1 mENU SELECTION
tO SELECT A MENU ITEM, USE THE UP/DOWN CURSOR KEY TO MOVE THE MENU BAR
UP AND DOWN. wHEN THE BAR IS HIGHLIGHTING THE ITEM YOU WANT, PRESS
THE RETURN KEY TO SELECT IT. yOU MAY ALSO SELECT AN ITEM BY PRESSING
THE NUMBER THAT CORRSEPONDS TO THE ITEM, EVEN THOUGH THE NUMBERS ARE
NOT DISPLAYED ON THE MENUS.
mANY OF THE ITEMS ON THE MAIN MENU DISPLAY OTHER MENUS WHEN SELECTED.
uSE THE SAME METHOD TO SELECT ITEMS ON ALL MENUS IN nOVATERM. tHE f1
KEY ALWAYS SELECTS THE LAST ITEM ON A MENU. iN MOST CASES, THIS
RETURNS YOU TO THE PREVIOUS MENU OR THE MAIN MENU.
2.2 mODULES
mODULES ARE USED TO COMPENSATE FOR THE SMALL AMOUNT OF MEMORY IN THE
cOMMODORE 64. aLL OF THE VARIOUS MODULE FILES COULD NOT POSSIBLY FIT
INTO THE COMPUTER'S MEMORY AT THE SAME TIME. oNLY ONE OF EACH TYPE OF
MODULE IS KEPT IN MEMORY AT A TIME. fOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU HAVE THE
xMODEM PROTOCOL LOADED, IT RESIDES IN MEMORY UNTIL YOU SELECT ANOTHER
PROTOCOL. mODULES MAKE IT VERY EASY TO ADD A NEW PROTOCOL OR SUPPORT
A NEW MODEM OR TERMINAL EMULATION. bY SIMPLY ADDING A NEW MODULE WITH
THE PROPER MODULE PREFIX nOVATERM'S CAPABILITIES ARE EXPANDED.
sINCE THERE ARE SO MANY KINDS OF MODULE FILES, THERE'S NO TELLING WHAT
CAME WITH YOUR COPY OF THE PROGRAM. a COMPLETE LIST OF FILES RELEASED
WITH nOVATERM 9.3 IS PROVIDED BELOW AS A CHECK AGAINST YOUR COPY.

tHE MODULE FILES ARE THOSE WITH A DISTINCT PREFIX IN THE FILE NAME.
tHE PREFIX DENOTES THE PARTICULAR TYPE OF MODULE FILE. tHE MEANING OF
EACH PREFIX IS DESCRIBED BELOW:
"PRT" FILES - tHESE ARE EXTERNAL FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOLS.
"MODEM" FILES - tHESE ARE MODEM DRIVERS. bY USING THE MODEM FILE THAT
CORRESPONDS TO YOUR MODEM, YOU MAKE nOVATERM COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR
MODEM. tHE DRIVERS CONTAIN ROUTINES FOR DIALING, ANSWERING, HANGING
UP, AND PICKING UP THE PHONE.
"ASC" FILES - sEE SECTION 3.5.4, ascii TRANSLATION TABLES.
"TERM" FILES - tHESE MODULES ALLOW FOR DIFFERENT KINDS OF TERMINAL
EMULATION. aT THIS TIME, nOVATERM SUPPORTS vt52 AND vt102, WHICH ARE
USED FOR COMMUNICATING WITH MAINFRAMES, AND ansi, A POPULAR GRAPHICS
INTERFACE FOUND ON MANY ibm BULLETIN BOARDS.
"FONT" FILES - tHESE FILES DEFINE THE CHARACTER PATTERN IN 40 COLUMNS.
yOU MAY CHANGE THE WAY LETTERS LOOK BY CREATING A NEW FONT.
"FONT80" FILES - tHESE ARE THE FONT FILES FOR 80 COLUMN TERMINAL MODE.
"NOVA" FILES - tHESE MODULES ARE SEPARATE PROGRAMS ACCESSIBLE FROM
nOVATERM ITSELF. sOME UTILITIES AND FEATURES OF nOVATERM WOULD NOT
ALL FIT INTO ONE PROGRAM, SO THEY HAVE BEEN INCLUDED AS EXTERNAL
PROGRAMS.
tHE MACHINE LANGUAGE FILES "NOVA9.3-1.ML" AND "NOVA9.3-2.ML" CONTAIN
DEFAULT MODULES THAT ARE USED IF NO MODULES MAY BE LOADED FROM DISK.
tHE DEFAULT MODEM DRIVER IS hAYES 2400 ("MODEM.hAYES 2400"); THE
DEFAULT PROTOCOL IS xMODEM ("PRT.xMODEM"); AND THE DEFAULT TERMINAL
EMULATOR IS THE STANDARD TERM ("TERM.STANDARD").
2.3 cONFIGURATION
yOU MUST CONFIGURE nOVATERM FOR USE ON YOUR PARTICULAR COMPUTER SETUP.
tO DO THIS, SELECT "tERMINAL PARAMS" FROM THE MAIN MENU. tHIS PRESENTS
YOU WITH ANOTHER MENU WITH VARIOUS TERMINAL SETTINGS. nOTE THAT
PRESSING THE RIGHT-CURSOR KEY ON THIS PARAMETER MENU DISPLAYS MORE
TERMINAL SETTINGS.
tHE DESCRIPTIONS OF EACH FUNCTION IN THIS SECTION ARE VERY BRIEF AND
ARE INTENDED ONLY TO GIVE YOU ENOUGH INFORMATION TO SET UP nOVATERM
FOR REGULAR USE. rEFER TO SECTION 3 OF THE DOCUMENTATION FOR MORE
DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT THE FUNCTIONS DESCRIBED HERE.
2.3.1 mODEM TYPE.
sELECT "mODEM TYPE". a LIST OF VARIOUS MODEMS IS DISPLAYED. cHOOSE
THE MODEM TYPE THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR MODEM.
* mOST 300 BAUD MODEMS ARE 1650 OR 1660 COMPATIBLE.
* cHOOSE "1670" IF YOU HAVE A 1670.
* cHOOSE "hAYES 1200" IF YOU HAVE A 1200 BAUD hAYES COMPATIBLE.
* cHOOSE "hAYES 2400" IF YOU HAVE A 2400 BAUD hAYES COMPATIBLE.
important note: iF YOU ARE USING A 1670 OR hAYES MODEM DRIVER, DO
THE FOLLOWING IMMEDIATELY AFTER SELECTING THE MODEM TYPE:
* pRESS f1 TO RETURN TO THE MAIN MENU.
* sELECT "tERMINAL MODE".
* yOU SHOULD SEE SIX LETTERS SEPARATED BY COLONS IN THE UPPER LEFT
CORNER OF THE SCREEN. lOOK AT THE FOURTH LETTER FROM THE LEFT (IT
SHOULD BE A c).
* iF THAT LETTER IS HIGHLIGHTED, THEN YOU NEED TO SELECT A DIFFERENT
MODEM TYPE. cHOOSE EITHER "hAYES12INV" OR "hAYES24INV" DEPENDING ON
THE BAUD RATE OF YOUR MODEM.
2.3.2 tERMINAL TYPE.
tHE TYPE OF TERMINAL EMULATION YOU WANT DEPENDS ON YOUR PRIMARY USE
FOR nOVATERM. yOUR NEEDS MAY VARY FROM TIME TO TIME. cHOOSE THE
TERMINAL YOU PLAN TO USE MOST OFTEN. iF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU WILL
BE USING, SELECT "STANDARD".
* fOR MOST APPLICATIONS, THE "STANDARD" TERMINAL IS SUFFICIENT.
* fOR COMMUNICATING WITH ibm SYSTEMS WITH ansi EMULATION, SELECT
"ansi".
* fOR COMMUNICATION WITH MAINFRAME SYSTEMS SUCH AS vax OR unix
MACHINES, SELECT EITHER "vt102" OR "vt52/h19", DEPENDING ON THE
SETTINGS OF THE MAINFRAME.
2.3.3 ascii TRANSLATION TABLE.
sEE SECTION 3.5.4 FOR A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF ascii TRANSLATION
TABLES. uSE THE "STANDARD" TABLE FOR STANDARD OR CONFERENCE TERMINAL
MODE. fOR ansi, vt52, OR vt102 EMULATION ON A MAINFRAME OR ibm bbs,
SELECT "ansi/vt" AFTER SELECTING THIS MENU OPTION.
2.3.4 fONT FILES.
tHE "NOVATERM" FONT IS THE DEFAULT. iF YOU HAVE OTHER FONT FILES
(NONE OTHERS ARE INCLUDED WITH nOVATERM), SELECT THIS OPTION AND
CHOOSE THE FONT STYLE YOU WANT.
2.3.5 80 COLUMN FONTS.
iF YOU ARE COMMUNICATING WITH vt52 OR vt102 EMULATION, YOU MUST SELECT
THE "vt102/52" 80 COLUMN FONT. iF YOU ARE USING ansi, CHOOSE THE
"ansi" FONT. oTHERWISE, SELECT THE "NOVATERM" FONT.
2.3.6 sCREEN COLORS.
tHERE ARE THREE OPTIONS FOR CHANGING SCREEN COLORS ON THE TERMINAL
SETUP MENU. eACH TIME YOU SELECT ONE, THE APPROPRIATE PART OF THE
SCREEN (TEXT, BACKGROUND, OR BORDER) INCREMENTS TO THE NEXT OF 16
AVAILABLE COLORS. kEEP INCREMENTING EACH COLOR UNTIL YOU HAVE THE
COLOR COMBINATION YOU DESIRE.
2.3.7 dIAL METHOD.
pRESS THE RIGHT-ARROW KEY TO BRING UP THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TERMINAL
SETUP MENU. nEXT TO THE ITEM "dIAL METHOD", YOU SHOULD SEE EITHER THE
WORD "TONE" OR "PULSE". iF YOUR PHONE LINE DOES NOT HAVE TOUCH-TONE
SERVICE, SELECT "dIAL METHOD" UNTIL IT READS "PULSE". sOME MODEMS
ONLY SUPPORT PULSE DIALING; FOR THESE MODEM TYPES (SUCH AS THE 1650)
YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO SELECT "TONE".
2.3.8 sAVE CONFIGURATION.
aT THIS POINT, YOU HAVE SET UP EVERYTHING THAT IS REQUIRED TO BEGIN
COMMUNICATIONS. pRESS THE RIGHT-CURSOR KEY AGAIN TO MOVE BACK TO THE
FIRST SETUP MENU. sELECT "sAVE CONFIG FILE" TO SAVE YOUR
CONFIGURATION. oTHER CONFIGURATION OPTIONS ON THE TERMINAL PARAMETERS
MENU MAY BE SET AND SAVED LATER WHEN YOU HAVE STARTED USING nOVATERM
